Dancer (2016)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

Sergei Polunin is a breathtaking ballet talent who questions his existence and his commitment to dance just as he is about to become a legend.

The Quartile Take

Dancer captures Sergei Polunin's turbulent life and extraordinary gift through visually stunning footage, including the viral 'Take Me to Church' performance that anchors the film beautifully. The cinematography is genuinely exceptional, blending archival material with lush new footage in ways that feel intimate and electric. However, the narrative arc — tortured prodigy wrestling with fame and family pressure — follows a fairly familiar documentary template, and the ending feels somewhat unresolved and anticlimactic, leaving the subject's future ambiguous without offering much thematic closure. The film is compelling viewing but doesn't fully transcend the biographical dance-documentary form.
