The Joneses (2010)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

A seemingly perfect family moves into a suburban neighborhood, but when it comes to the truth as to why they're living there, they don't exactly come clean with their neighbors.

The Quartile Take

The Joneses is built on a genuinely sharp and distinctive satirical premise — a fake family planted in suburbia as stealth marketers — that gives it real novelty as a social commentary on consumerism and aspiration. The cast, led by Demi Moore and David Duchovny, delivers competent performances that sell the comedy-drama blend, though neither is stretched particularly hard. The plot cleverly sustains its central conceit but stumbles in the third act when it pivots toward more conventional romantic drama territory, diluting the satirical edge. Cinematography is functional suburban-glossy, serving the premise without distinguishing itself visually. The ending resolves things a bit too neatly given the film's darker undertones, particularly around the tragedy that occurs mid-film.
