Batman and his sidekick Robin attempt to the foil the sinister schemes of a deranged set of new villains, most notably the melancholy Mr. Freeze, who wants to make Gotham City into an arctic region, and the sultry Poison Ivy, a botanical femme fatale. As the Dynamic Duo contend with these bad guys, a third hero, Batgirl, joins the ranks of the city's crime-fighters.
Batman & Robin is widely regarded as one of the worst superhero films ever made. The plot is a campy, incoherent mess juggling too many villains and subplots with little dramatic tension. Acting is broadly cartoonish — Schwarzenegger's ice puns and the general mugging undermine any emotional stakes, though some cast members try their best. Cinematography is actually one of the film's stronger suits: the neon-drenched, hyper-stylized production design is visually distinctive and at least commits to its aesthetic. Novelty is low because while the campy tone is extreme, it merely retreads the Adam West era style rather than offering anything genuinely original — it's a regressive, formulaic approach. The ending wraps up predictably and unsatisfyingly, failing to deliver any real payoff.
