Ra.One (2011)

When the titular antagonist of an action game takes on physical form, it's up to the game's less powerful protagonist to save the world.

The Quartile Take

Ra.One is a visually ambitious Bollywood superhero film that attempts to blend Indian cinema conventions with Hollywood-style VFX spectacle. The cinematography and action set pieces are technically impressive for its era and budget, earning above-average marks. The novelty comes from its distinctive Bollywood-meets-video-game-superhero mashup, which is genuinely singular in tone and conception even if uneven. However, the plot is convoluted and narratively weak, blending tones poorly and struggling with pacing. The acting, while energetic from Shah Rukh Khan, leans heavily into broad comedic and melodramatic registers that undermine dramatic stakes. The ending is underwhelming and feels unearned given the buildup, wrapping up its high-concept premise in a rushed and unsatisfying manner.
