Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating
A young American falls hard for a Romanian cellist whose father has recently died -- and whose violent past could bring about his own demise.
Charlie Countryman is a tonally inconsistent romantic thriller that struggles to balance its quirky elements with genuine emotional weight. The premise of an American falling for a Romanian woman entangled with dangerous criminals feels familiar and underdeveloped. Shia LaBeouf and Evan Rachel Wood bring some energy to their roles, but the supporting cast is more memorable, particularly Mads Mikkelsen as the menacing antagonist. The Bucharest setting offers some visual interest and the cinematography captures a gritty European atmosphere competently, though without particular distinction. The film's blend of magical realism (ghostly visitations) with crime thriller and romance never fully coheres, and the ending feels rushed and unearned. It sits as a modestly ambitious but ultimately forgettable mid-tier effort.
