Mumbai, India, November 26, 2008. While several terrorists spread hatred and death through the city, others attack the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. Both hotel staff and guests risk their lives, making unthinkable sacrifices to protect themselves and keep everyone safe while help arrives.
Hotel Mumbai reconstructs the 2008 Taj Hotel siege with visceral intensity and commendable restraint. The acting is the film's genuine standout — Dev Patel, Anupam Kher, and Armie Hammer deliver grounded, humanizing performances that elevate what could have been exploitation material. The plot is functional but episodic, following multiple survival threads that serve tension well but leave characters somewhat thinly developed beyond their immediate peril. Cinematography is competent and immersive during siege sequences but rarely transcends genre craft. Novelty is moderate — the film covers well-trodden siege-thriller territory, though its Indian perspective and specific historical grounding give it a meaningful sense of place and cultural authenticity. The ending is emotionally honest and avoids false triumphalism, though the epilogue text-card resolution feels like a standard docudrama convention rather than a truly resonant cinematic close.
