After thirty years in the big corporation, Ugo Fantozzi retires. Suddenly, he needs things to do in everyday life and he tries a number of activities: helping Pina shopping; babysitting grand-daughter Uga; a trip to Venice; learning golf. He then fakes documents to get a new job, but in the end he becomes a hypochondriac and doesn't even take a long-awaited chance with Miss Silvani.
Fantozzi Retires is a late-series entry in the beloved Italian comedy franchise, following the well-worn formula of stringing together sketch-like misadventures for the hapless everyman Ugo Fantozzi. Paolo Villaggio remains committed and skilled in the role, bringing genuine comedic pathos to the character as always. However, by this installment the series formula feels thoroughly established rather than fresh, recycling the same humiliation gags and social satire without significant evolution. The cinematography is functional Italian comedy-of-the-era TV-adjacent work with little visual distinction. The ending, in which Fantozzi misses his chance with Miss Silvani and descends into hypochondria, is consistent with the franchise's pessimistic worldview but lands as more tired than bittersweet at this late stage. A competent but formulaic chapter for dedicated fans of the character.
