Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul (2017)

Quartile rating: 5.5/10 · 1 rating

A Heffley family road trip to attend Meemaw's 90th birthday party goes hilariously off course thanks to Greg's newest scheme to get to a video gaming convention.

The Quartile Take

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul is a largely formulaic road-trip comedy that recasts the beloved characters with a new ensemble, losing much of the charm of the originals. The plot is a predictable chain of mishaps driven by Greg's self-serving scheme, offering little genuine surprise or heart. The acting from the recast leads feels flat and lacks the chemistry of the prior films, while the cinematography is serviceable but unremarkable TV-movie fare. Novelty is low — it's a by-the-numbers sequel recycling road-trip tropes without a distinctive voice. The ending resolves things tidily but without emotional payoff. Across the board, a below-average entry in the franchise and in family comedy generally.
