Girls Trip (2017)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

Four girlfriends take a trip to New Orleans for an annual festival and, along the way, rediscover their wild sides and strengthen the bonds of sisterhood.

The Quartile Take

Girls Trip succeeds largely on the strength of its performances, particularly Regina Hall's grounded dramatic work and Tiffany Haddish's breakout comedic force that became a cultural moment. The plot is fairly formulaic — a girls' getaway with a cheating husband subplot and predictable reconciliation beats — following well-worn comedy road trip conventions. Cinematography is functional but unremarkable, serviceable for the genre without any distinctive visual choices. Novelty is limited as the premise recycles familiar ensemble comedy tropes, though the unapologetically Black female perspective and raucous energy gave it cultural distinctiveness within its genre. The ending wraps up tidily and satisfyingly if somewhat predictably.
