Unicorn Store (2017)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

A woman named Kit moves back to her parent's house, where she receives a mysterious invitation that would fulfill her childhood dreams.

The Quartile Take

Unicorn Store is a whimsical indie with a charming premise about arrested development and chasing childhood dreams, but the narrative feels thin and meandering. Brie Larson (who also directs) brings warmth to the lead role, and the supporting cast including Samuel L. Jackson adds energy, but the story struggles to build meaningful momentum. Visually it has a pastel-saturated indie aesthetic that suits the tone without being particularly distinctive. The allegory about growing up while holding onto imagination is heartfelt but underdeveloped, and the ending feels abrupt and somewhat unsatisfying, leaving threads unresolved. It sits comfortably in the realm of quirky indie dramedies without distinguishing itself enough to rise above the crowded field.
