The Quartile Take

Carbone is a competent but unremarkable French crime thriller. The plot follows a fairly familiar trajectory of an ordinary man drawn into increasingly dangerous criminal territory, with the VAT carbon credit fraud scheme providing some topical interest but not enough originality to distinguish it from the crowd. The acting is solid but unremarkable, with Benoît Magimel doing capable work in the lead without fully elevating the material. The cinematography is functional and professional but lacks distinctive visual style. The film struggles to carve out a unique identity in the crowded heist/crime thriller genre, recycling familiar beats of betrayal and escalation. The ending feels rushed and somewhat unsatisfying, failing to deliver a memorable payoff to the story's setup.
