Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow (1963)

Quartile rating: 7.5/10 · 1 rating

Three tales of very different women using their sexuality as a means to getting what they want.

The Quartile Take

A beloved Italian anthology comedy showcasing Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni in three distinct vignettes. The acting is the clear standout — Loren is magnetic and transforms completely across each segment, earning a well-above-average mark. The three stories ('Adelina', 'Anna', 'Mara') vary in quality but collectively offer charm and wit, with the famous striptease sequence in 'Mara' becoming iconic. Cinematography is competent and period-appropriate but not especially distinguished. The anthology format was not uncommon in Italian cinema of the era, and the film's novelty rests more on Loren's performance range than structural or thematic innovation. The endings of each segment are satisfying without being remarkable. Overall a well-crafted, entertaining vehicle elevated primarily by its lead performances.
