Primeval (2007)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

A news team is sent to Burundi to capture and bring home a legendary 25-foot crocodile. Their difficult task turns potentially deadly when a warlord targets them for death.

The Quartile Take

Primeval is a mid-2000s creature feature that mixes a giant crocodile thriller with a African warlord subplot, which sounds distinctive but is executed in a muddled, unfocused way. The dual-threat premise dilutes both storylines rather than elevating either. Acting is serviceable but unremarkable from a largely forgettable cast. Cinematography captures some decent African location footage but nothing exceptional. The warlord angle provides a thin veneer of novelty over what is otherwise a formulaic monster movie, and the ending offers little satisfaction or resolution. Overall a below-average genre entry that fails to capitalize on its unusual setting or premise.
