Kikujiro (1999)

Quartile rating: 7.5/10 · 1 rating

Brash, loudmouthed and opportunistic, Kikujiro is the unlikely companion for Masao who is determined to see the mother he has never met. The two begin a series of adventures which soon turns out to be a whimsical journey of laughter and tears with a wide array of surprises and unique characters along the way.

The Quartile Take

Kikujiro is a distinctly personal and idiosyncratic Kitano film — tender beneath its rough exterior, blending slapstick, melancholy, and childlike wonder in a way that feels utterly singular. The road-trip premise is simple but the film's emotional texture and Kitano's deadpan comic timing give it a unique voice. The episodic structure works charitably as picaresque whimsy but can feel meandering. Takeshi Kitano's performance is characteristically understated yet expressive. Cinematography is clean and warm without being remarkable. The ending is emotionally resonant but not surprising. Novelty is the film's clear standout — its tone and authorial stamp are unmistakable.
