A chief mechanic at a factory, haunted by apocalyptic nightmares, becomes a hero when Earth is invaded by a mysterious army bent on destruction.
Extinction (2018) is a Netflix sci-fi thriller with a genuinely surprising mid-film twist that elevates what initially seems like a generic alien invasion story. The plot twist regarding who the 'aliens' actually are is clever and reframes the entire narrative, earning it a slightly above-average plot score. However, the acting is serviceable at best — Michael Peña and Lizzy Caplan deliver competent but unremarkable performances, and the supporting cast is largely forgettable. Cinematography is functional but uninspired, typical of mid-tier Netflix productions with standard genre lighting and blocking. The novelty comes primarily from the twist concept, which gives the film a degree of distinctiveness even if its execution borrows heavily from other invasion films. The ending wraps up reasonably well given the twist, though it feels rushed and doesn't fully capitalize on its own premise.
