Following a ghost invasion of Manhattan, paranormal enthusiasts Erin Gilbert and Abby Yates, nuclear engineer Jillian Holtzmann, and subway worker Patty Tolan band together to stop the otherworldly threat.
The 2016 Ghostbusters reboot struggles to distinguish itself meaningfully from the beloved original. The plot is formulaic and predictable, hitting the same story beats as the 1984 film without adding much new. The cast — particularly Kate McKinnon and Melissa McCarthy — bring genuine comedic energy and are the film's strongest asset, elevating material that often lets them down. Cinematography is functional but unremarkable, lacking the visual wit of the original. Novelty is low: while the gender-swapped cast was a notable real-world conversation, the film itself is largely derivative in conception and execution, recycling the premise without a truly fresh voice. The ending is loud and CGI-heavy but emotionally hollow, relying on spectacle over satisfying resolution.
