Super spy Lance Sterling and scientist Walter Beckett are almost exact opposites. Lance is smooth, suave and debonair. Walter is… not. But what Walter lacks in social skills he makes up for in smarts and invention, creating the awesome gadgets Lance uses on his epic missions. But when events take an unexpected turn, Walter and Lance suddenly have to rely on each other in a whole new way.
Spies in Disguise is a competent and entertaining animated spy comedy with a fun central gimmick (spy turned pigeon) and solid voice performances from Will Smith and Tom Holland. The plot is predictable buddy-comedy fare with a thin villain and telegraphed beats. The animation is polished but not exceptional by Blue Sky Studios standards. The novelty of the pigeon transformation and pacifist gadget angle gives it a mild spark of originality but not enough to elevate it above the crowded animated family film space. The ending resolves everything neatly but without much surprise or emotional resonance, feeling rushed and formulaic.
