The Experiment (2010)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

20 men are chosen to participate in the roles of guards and prisoners in a psychological study that ultimately spirals out of control.

The Quartile Take

A remake of the German film Das Experiment (2001), which itself was based on the Stanford Prison Experiment. The 2010 American version brings little new to the concept, following a largely predictable escalation of violence and power abuse. The plot hits familiar beats without the psychological nuance of its source material. Acting is serviceable with Adrien Brody and Forest Whitaker delivering competent but unspectacular performances. Cinematography is functional but unremarkable. The ending resolves too neatly and without the moral weight the premise deserves. As a remake of an already well-known story, novelty is quite low.
