Sing 2 (2021)

Quartile rating: 7.5/10 · 1 rating

Buster and his new cast now have their sights set on debuting a new show at the Crystal Tower Theater in glamorous Redshore City. But with no connections, he and his singers must sneak into the Crystal Entertainment offices, run by the ruthless wolf mogul Jimmy Crystal, where the gang pitches the ridiculous idea of casting the lion rock legend Clay Calloway in their show. Buster must embark on a quest to find the now-isolated Clay and persuade him to return to the stage.

The Quartile Take

Sing 2 is a serviceable animated sequel that delivers more of the same jukebox musical entertainment. The plot is formulaic — a ragtag troupe chasing a big dream against a cartoonish villain, with a reclusive rock legend subplot borrowed from countless redemption arcs. Acting (voice performances) is solid, with Bono's Clay Calloway adding some emotional weight. Cinematography is polished and visually energetic, with the Redshore City setting giving it a Vegas-glam aesthetic that's well-executed for animation. Novelty is low — it's a fairly by-the-numbers sequel that recycles the first film's structure and adds little distinctive beyond scale. The ending is crowd-pleasing and emotionally functional, if predictable. A fun but unremarkable family crowd-pleaser.
