USSR, June 1985. After contact with the Salyut 7 space station is lost, cosmonauts Vladimir Dzhanibekov and Viktor Savinykh dock with the empty, frozen craft, and bring her back to life. Based on actual events.
Salyut-7 delivers a visually spectacular depiction of Soviet space rescue operations, with cinematography that rivals Hollywood productions in its portrayal of zero-gravity environments and the harrowing docking sequences. The true story provides inherently compelling drama, and the two leads bring solid conviction to their roles. However, the narrative leans heavily on generic disaster-movie beats and patriotic melodrama, diluting the genuine tension of the real events. The ending deflates somewhat into conventional triumphalism, sacrificing emotional nuance for crowd-pleasing resolution. While the film is distinctive as a Russian space epic with authentic period detail, it doesn't fully transcend its genre conventions to feel truly singular.
