Ellie Linton, a teen from an Australian coastal town, leads her friends on an excursion to a camp deep in the woods, dubbed "Hell." Upon their return, the youths find that their town has been overrun by an enemy army, and their friends and family have been imprisoned. When the hostile invaders become alerted to their presence, Ellie and her friends band together to escape -- and strike back against -- this mysterious enemy.
Tomorrow, When the War Began is a reasonably competent YA adaptation that brings John Marsden's beloved Australian novel to screen with some energy. The plot follows the source material's survivalist premise well enough, delivering decent tension and camaraderie among the teen protagonists, though it never transcends its genre trappings. Acting is mixed — the young cast is uneven, with some performers clearly more comfortable than others, and emotional beats often feel forced. Cinematography captures the Australian landscape adequately but rarely elevates the material beyond functional action-movie visuals. Novelty is modest but present — the Australian setting and perspective on home invasion/occupation gives it a distinct flavour compared to American YA fare, though the narrative beats are familiar. The ending is abrupt and unsatisfying, clearly setting up sequels that never fully materialized, leaving the story feeling incomplete rather than deliberately open-ended.
