Happy Death Day (2017)

The Quartile Take

Happy Death Day cleverly mashes Groundhog Day's time-loop mechanics with slasher horror to entertaining effect. The premise is fresh enough for the genre, and the lead performance by Jessica Rothe carries the film with surprising charm and range. The plot is engaging if somewhat predictable, with a mystery that doesn't fully hide its twists. Cinematography is functional but unremarkable — standard genre work with little visual ambition. The ending is satisfying within its genre constraints but not particularly surprising. Novelty gets a modest boost for the genre-blending concept, though execution is uneven.
