Escape Plan 2: Hades (2018)

Quartile rating: 5/10 · 1 rating

Ray Breslin manages an elite team of security specialists trained in the art of breaking people out of the world's most impenetrable prisons. When his most trusted operative, Shu Ren, is kidnapped and disappears inside the most elaborate prison ever built, Ray must track him down with the help of some of his former friends.

The Quartile Take

Escape Plan 2: Hades is a straight-to-video sequel that largely abandons what made the original entertaining — namely the chemistry between Stallone and Schwarzenegger and a clever prison-break premise. The plot is convoluted without being interesting, recycling the high-tech prison concept with diminishing returns. Acting is perfunctory; Stallone is barely present and the new cast members lack charisma. Cinematography is flat and cheaply lit, typical of low-budget DTV productions. Novelty is very low — it's a formulaic, by-the-numbers sequel that adds little new to the franchise or the genre. The ending resolves things without satisfaction or surprise.
