Unstoppable (2010)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

When a massive, unmanned locomotive roars out of control, the threat is more ominous than just a derailment. The train is laden with toxic chemicals, and an accident would decimate human life and cause an environmental disaster. The only hope of bringing the train to a safe stop is in the hands of veteran engineer Frank Barnes, and young conductor Will Colson, who must risk their lives to save those in the runaway's path. Inspired by true events.

The Quartile Take

Unstoppable is a competent, propulsive action-thriller that Tony Scott executes with his trademark kinetic energy and rapid cutting. The plot is straightforward and familiar — a runaway train disaster narrative with redemption arcs bolted on — earning no special distinction. Denzel Washington and Chris Pine share good chemistry and deliver solid performances, though the roles don't demand much range. Cinematography is energetic and technically proficient in the Scott house style, with helicopter shots and relentless pace, but it's a well-worn aesthetic rather than a standout visual achievement. Novelty is low: the runaway-train premise has been done before (Runaway Train, Speed), and while Scott executes it well, there's little that's genuinely distinctive about the conception. The ending delivers satisfying tension and resolution consistent with the genre, but the outcome is never seriously in doubt. A well-crafted, enjoyable genre film that doesn't transcend its formula.
