An irreverent comedy about the misadventures of Moondog, a rebellious stoner and lovable rogue who lives large.

The Quartile Take

The Beach Bum is a gloriously sun-drenched, neon-soaked mood piece from Harmony Korine that prioritizes vibe and character over conventional narrative. Benicio del Toro, Snoop Dogg, and Matthew McConaughey commit fully to the anarchic energy, with McConaughey delivering a genuinely loose and magnetic performance. Sean Price Williams' cinematography is sumptuous — saturated Florida light, chaotic handheld energy, and a visual texture that feels genuinely alive. Korine's conception of Moondog as an id-driven anti-hero operating in a world without consequences is a singular artistic statement, making the film feel distinctly his own. However, the plot is essentially non-existent — a string of loosely connected bacchanalia that can feel purposeless rather than liberating — and the ending drifts rather than lands, offering little cathartic or thematic resolution. It's a love-it-or-leave-it provocation that succeeds more as sensory experience than as story.
