The Ash Lad: In the Hall of the Mountain King (2017)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

Espen “Ash Lad”, a poor farmer’s son, embarks on a dangerous quest with his brothers to save the princess from a vile troll known as the Mountain King – in order to collect a reward and save his family’s farm from ruin.

The Quartile Take

The Ash Lad is a competent Norwegian fairy-tale adventure that leans into familiar folklore tropes with reasonable production values. The plot follows well-worn quest structure with few surprises, hitting expected beats of the chosen-underdog hero saving a princess. Acting is serviceable but uneven, with the lead performing earnestly while supporting characters veer into pantomime. Cinematography captures Norway's landscapes attractively but without particular cinematic distinction. Novelty is limited — while it draws on specifically Norwegian folklore (the Askeladden tales), the execution is fairly standard family fantasy fare with recognizable genre conventions. The ending wraps up predictably and without much emotional resonance, satisfying in a mechanical rather than genuinely earned sense.
