In a world where people collect pocket-size monsters (Pokémon) to do battle, a boy comes across an intelligent monster who seeks to be a detective.
Detective Pikachu earns points for its visually inventive world-building — the live-action/CGI Pokémon integration is genuinely impressive and the neo-noir aesthetic is a novel angle for the franchise. However, the plot leans heavily on familiar amnesiac-detective tropes and the mystery resolves in a fairly predictable, underwhelming way. The acting is serviceable but unremarkable, with Ryan Reynolds' voice work carrying more charm than the human performances. The ending twist feels contrived rather than earned, undercutting the whodunit setup. A solid visual achievement that doesn't quite match its ambitious premise narratively.
