Generation Iron 2 (2017)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

From the director of Generation Iron, comes the anticipated sequel that will depict 5 of the top bodybuilding and fitness mega-stars on a quest of achieving the ultimate physique and taking it to the next extreme level. In the world of social media and internet, the rules have changed as to what makes an iconic bodybuilding mass-monster. Starring Kai Greene, Calum Von Moger, Rich Piana, among others, this film will explore an all new generation of bodybuilders and how this new world, and new people, carve their own path to physique perfection.

The Quartile Take

Generation Iron 2 expands its lens beyond the Olympia stage to cover social media-era bodybuilding figures like Calum Von Moger and Rich Piana, which gives it some contemporary relevance, but the narrative structure feels looser and less focused than its predecessor. The cinematography is competent and visually impressive when showcasing physiques and gym environments, but the storytelling is episodic and lacks dramatic stakes. The subject matter is inherently niche and the formula largely recycles the talking-head documentary approach of the first film. Without a unifying competitive arc, the ending feels anticlimactic. Solid for fans of the genre but offers little that distinguishes it cinematically or narratively.
