Vivo (2021)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

A music-loving kinkajou named Vivo embarks on the journey of a lifetime to fulfill his destiny and deliver a love song for an old friend.

The Quartile Take

Vivo is a serviceable animated musical with a charming premise built around a kinkajou and original Lin-Manuel Miranda songs, but the plot follows a very familiar road-trip quest structure with predictable beats and an emotionally undercooked resolution. The voice performances are energetic and Miranda's musical contributions give it genuine personality, lifting it above generic. Visually it's competent Sony Animation work with vibrant color but nothing groundbreaking. Its Latin musical flavor and unusual animal protagonist give it some distinctiveness, but the story mechanics are too formulaic to be truly singular. The ending resolves neatly but lacks the emotional punch the setup promises.
