For a long time, Natalie, an Australian architect living in New York City, had always believed that what she had seen in rom-coms is all fantasy. But after thwarting a mugger at a subway station only to be knocked out while fleeing, Natalie wakes up and discovers that her life has suddenly become her worst nightmare—a romantic comedy—and she is the leading lady.
Isn't It Romantic is a mildly charming meta-comedy that playfully deconstructs rom-com tropes through its self-aware premise. The plot is functional but thin — the satirical conceit carries the story more than any genuine narrative weight, and the arc is predictable despite the winking self-awareness. Rebel Wilson is likable and game in the lead, and the supporting cast (Liam Hemsworth, Adam DeVine, Priyanka Chopra) are competent but largely playing one-note archetypes by design. Cinematography is glossy and deliberately heightened to mimic the rom-com aesthetic, but it's serviceable rather than inventive. Novelty scores modestly — the meta-parody angle isn't entirely fresh (cf. Enchanted), but the film has a distinct comedic voice and enough self-awareness to feel reasonably distinctive within its crowded genre. The ending is the weakest link: after building a satirical premise that should subvert expectations, it resolves in a thoroughly conventional, toothless way that partially undercuts the satire it spent the whole film constructing.
