Master Z: Ip Man Legacy (2018)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

Following his defeat by Master Ip, Cheung Tin Chi tries to make a life with his young son in Hong Kong, waiting tables at a bar that caters to expats. But it's not long before the mix of foreigners, money, and triad leaders draw him once again to the fight.

The Quartile Take

Master Z is a solid but unremarkable spinoff from the Ip Man franchise. The plot is a fairly generic crime-drama setup — fallen hero drawn back into conflict — with little originality in its story beats. Acting is competent, with Jin Zhang carrying the lead role adequately and Michelle Yeoh and Dave Bautista adding presence in supporting roles. Cinematography is serviceable with some stylish fight staging, though nothing exceptional. Novelty is low as the film treads familiar spinoff territory with recycled triad storylines, relying heavily on the established Ip Man brand. The ending delivers satisfying action closure without being particularly memorable.
