Serenity (2019)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

The quiet life of Baker Dill, a fishing boat captain who lives on the isolated Plymouth Island, where he spends his days obsessed with capturing an elusive tuna while fighting his personal demons, is interrupted when someone from his past comes to him searching for help.

The Quartile Take

Serenity (2019) is a fascinatingly bizarre neo-noir with a genuinely audacious twist — its video-game/virtual-reality reveal is so unexpected and conceptually bold that it earns top Novelty marks for sheer singularity, even if execution falls flat. The plot collapses under the weight of its own ambition; the twist is more bewildering than satisfying, and the ending fails to deliver emotional payoff. Acting is serviceable — McConaughey and Hathaway commit fully to the material despite the script's absurdities. Cinematography captures the sun-drenched island atmosphere competently with some stylish neo-noir framing. The ending, however, is a muddled resolution that undermines what little tension the film had built.
