Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating
Forced into exile by the English after being crowned King of Scotland, legendary warrior Robert the Bruce fights to reclaim the throne.
Outlaw King offers sweeping Scottish Highland vistas and genuinely impressive widescreen cinematography, but the narrative feels rushed and underdeveloped given its theatrical cut, leaving character motivations thin. The story treads familiar Braveheart-adjacent territory without meaningfully distinguishing itself. Chris Pine and Florence Pugh deliver solid performances but the ensemble is underused. The battle sequences are visceral and well-staged, particularly the climactic confrontation, but the ending feels abrupt rather than triumphant. Overall a visually accomplished but narratively middling historical action film.
