John Cazale was in only five films – The Godfather, The Conversation, The Godfather: Part II, Dog Day Afternoon and The Deer Hunter – each was nominated for Best Picture. Yet today most people don't even know his name. I KNEW IT WAS YOU is a fresh tour through movies that defined a generation.
This short documentary benefits enormously from its subject — John Cazale's remarkable five-film legacy, each a Best Picture nominee, is genuinely compelling material. The talking-head tributes from Al Pacino, Meryl Streep, Francis Ford Coppola and others provide warm, credible testimony that elevates the film well above average in terms of on-screen presence and emotional authenticity. The cinematography is fairly standard documentary fare — archival clips and interview setups without distinctive visual ambition. The narrative structure is straightforward biography-tribute with no real surprises in form, though the subject himself is singular enough to give it modest novelty. The ending, like much of the film, is emotionally satisfying but conventional for the genre.
