The Quartile Take

The Spy Who Dumped Me is a serviceable action-comedy that leans heavily on the chemistry between Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon. The plot is a familiar fish-out-of-water spy romp with few surprises, hitting well-worn beats of ordinary people thrust into international espionage. McKinnon's comedic energy is the clear highlight and elevates the acting category above what the script warrants. Cinematography is competent for the genre with decent European location shooting but nothing visually distinctive. Novelty is low as it treads familiar ground blending buddy-comedy with spy thriller without a fresh angle. The ending is predictable and wraps up too neatly, failing to capitalize on the film's more anarchic comedic potential.
