Tag (2018)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

For one month every year, five highly competitive friends hit the ground running in a no-holds-barred game of tag they’ve been playing since the first grade. This year, the game coincides with the wedding of their only undefeated player, which should finally make him an easy target. But he knows they’re coming...and he’s ready.

The Quartile Take

Tag is a likable, high-concept comedy built on a genuinely wild true story, which gives it a natural novelty boost. The ensemble cast (Helms, Hamm, Renner, Johnson, Buress) has good chemistry and delivers solid if unspectacular performances. The plot is thin but serviceable, following the premise faithfully enough to sustain the runtime. Cinematography is functional with some fun slow-motion action parody sequences but nothing visually distinctive. The ending pivots to unexpected emotional sincerity, which is admirable but lands unevenly for some viewers.
