This compelling Documentary moves beyond the spotlight and past the attention-grabbing headlines to give pop superstar Chris Brown a chance to tell his own story. New interviews with the international phenomenon reveal long-awaited answers about his passion for making music, his tumultuous and much publicized relationships, and the pitfalls of coming of age in the public eye. Also included is new concert footage, behind-the-scenes access, and special interviews from Usher, Jennifer Lopez, DJ Khaled, Mike Tyson, Jamie Foxx and others.
A fairly standard celebrity self-portrait documentary that follows the well-worn formula of the subject narrating their own rise, controversies, and redemption arc. The inclusion of notable interview subjects like Usher, Jennifer Lopez, and Jamie Foxx adds some star power, but the film is largely one-sided and promotional in nature. Cinematography is competent but unremarkable — standard talking-head setups and concert footage. Novelty is low as the format closely resembles countless other music documentary vanity projects. The ending offers little resolution or genuine reflection, leaving the viewer with a polished but surface-level portrait.
