Peppermint (2018)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

A grieving mother transforms herself into a vigilante following the murders of her husband and daughter, eluding the authorities to deliver her own personal brand of justice.

The Quartile Take

Peppermint is a straightforward revenge thriller that follows a well-worn formula with little deviation. Jennifer Garner commits physically to the role and elevates the material somewhat, but the script offers thin characterization and recycled beats from the genre. The cinematography is competent and occasionally kinetic during action sequences but unremarkable overall. The narrative hits expected vigilante checkpoints — corruption, betrayal, revenge rampage — without subverting or enriching them. The ending resolves predictably, leaving little impression. Novelty is low as it's essentially a female-led Death Wish retread without a distinctive voice or craft to set it apart.
