The Quartile Take

Mortal Kombat (2021) is a serviceable video game adaptation that delivers on its promise of bloody, fan-service combat but stumbles in nearly every narrative dimension. The plot is a generic chosen-one origin story with a shoehorned new protagonist (Cole Young) that dilutes the established lore, earning a below-average score. Acting is functional at best — Joe Taslim's Sub-Zero is menacing but most performances are flat or campy without the charm to make it work. Cinematography is the film's relative strength, with some stylishly shot fight sequences and decent use of color grading to distinguish Outworld from Earth, landing above average. Novelty is low — despite the beloved IP, the film recycles well-worn tournament-fighter tropes and a predictable reboot formula without a distinctive voice. The ending feels rushed and unsatisfying, setting up a sequel in a way that undercuts any sense of resolution in the current story.
