Captured by smugglers when he was just a hatchling, a macaw named Blu never learned to fly and lives a happily domesticated life in Minnesota with his human friend, Linda. Blu is thought to be the last of his kind, but when word comes that Jewel, a lone female, lives in Rio de Janeiro, Blu and Linda go to meet her. Animal smugglers kidnap Blu and Jewel, but the pair soon escape and begin a perilous adventure back to freedom -- and Linda.
Rio is a colorful, energetic animated adventure that benefits from vibrant Brazilian settings and a charming vocal cast, but its plot is thoroughly formulaic — a fish-out-of-water story with predictable beats, cookie-cutter villains, and a romantic subplot that follows a well-worn arc. The animation is visually appealing and the carnival sequences pop with color, but cinematographically it doesn't push boundaries beyond standard animated blockbuster craft. The vocal performances (Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway) are likable but not remarkable. Novelty is low — despite the fresh Rio de Janeiro backdrop and samba-infused music, the underlying structure and character dynamics are recycled from countless animated predecessors. The ending wraps up neatly but without much surprise or emotional resonance beyond the expected happy resolution.
