Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

A botched store robbery places Wonder Woman in a global battle against a powerful and mysterious ancient force that puts her powers in jeopardy.

The Quartile Take

WW84 suffers from a bloated, incoherent plot built around a wish-granting MacGuffin that strains credibility even by superhero standards. The 1980s setting is underutilized beyond aesthetic flourishes. Gadot and Pascal give committed performances — Pascal in particular chews scenery entertainingly — but the script lets them down. Cinematography is competent with some bright action set-pieces but lacks the visual distinctiveness of the first film. The climax and resolution (a global televised renunciation) is narratively weak and emotionally unearned. The film largely retreads the first film's formula without meaningfully evolving the character or the genre, making it feel derivative despite its ambitions.
