The Professor (2019)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

A world-weary college professor is given a life-changing diagnosis and decides to throw all pretense and conventions to the wind and live his life as boldly and freely as possible with a biting sense of humor, a reckless streak and a touch of madness.

The Quartile Take

The Professor follows a fairly familiar 'dying man embraces life' narrative that doesn't break new ground, with Richard E. Grant delivering a committed and charming performance that elevates otherwise formulaic material. The cinematography is functional but unremarkable, and while the darkly comedic tone has some bite, the premise and execution feel recycled from similar terminal-illness dramedies. The ending offers modest emotional payoff without surprising or transcending the genre's conventions.
