To prove a point about measuring up and fitting in, Texas teen Willowdean “Dumplin’” Dickson enters a local pageant run by her ex-beauty queen mom.
Dumplin' is a warm-hearted YA adaptation elevated by Jennifer Aniston's committed performance as the pageant-obsessed mom and a wonderful Dolly Parton-heavy soundtrack. The fat-acceptance and self-esteem themes feel genuine rather than preachy, and the drag queen mentors add welcome texture. However, the plot follows fairly predictable coming-of-age beats, the cinematography is serviceable TV-movie level at best, and the ending resolves things a bit too tidily. Novelty gets a modest bump for the specific Texas pageant milieu, the Dolly Parton framing, and the body-positive angle blended with drag culture, making it feel more distinct than a typical YA adaptation, but it doesn't fully transcend its genre conventions.
