Having already left three grooms at the altar, Maggie Carpenter is branded "the runaway bride" by jaded New York journalist Ike Graham. But, after his facts are called into question, Ike races to Maggie's hometown to save his reputation and report on her upcoming fourth trip down the aisle – during which he's convinced she'll run again. Though he's there on a muckraking mission, Ike can't help but fall for this breathtaking heartbreaker.
Runaway Bride is a lightweight romantic comedy that reunites Julia Roberts and Richard Gere from Pretty Woman but fails to recapture that magic. The plot is formulaic and predictable, hitting every expected beat of the genre without surprise. Roberts and Gere have natural charm and chemistry that elevates what's on the page, keeping the film watchable even when the script lets them down. Cinematography is functional and pleasant but unremarkable for the era. The film offers little novelty — it's a by-the-numbers screwball romance with a recycled star pairing. The ending resolves exactly as expected with no real tension or emotional payoff, feeling rushed and unearned given the thin character development around Maggie's self-discovery arc.
