Buck is a big-hearted dog whose blissful domestic life is turned upside down when he is suddenly uprooted from his California home and transplanted to the exotic wilds of the Yukon during the Gold Rush of the 1890s. As the newest rookie on a mail delivery dog sled team—and later its leader—Buck experiences the adventure of a lifetime, ultimately finding his true place in the world and becoming his own master.
The 2020 adaptation of Jack London's classic novel is a competent, family-friendly adventure that benefits from Harrison Ford's warm presence and sweeping Yukon scenery. However, the CGI-rendered Buck is a persistent distraction that undermines emotional authenticity. The plot faithfully follows the beloved source material but offers little new interpretation, making it feel safe rather than inspired. Cinematography delivers attractive landscapes but lacks the raw, immersive quality the wilderness setting demands. The ending is emotionally satisfying in a conventional sense, and the film works well enough for its target audience, but it sits firmly in the territory of a polished but unremarkable adaptation.
