Two families attempt a daredevil plan to escape the GDR with a homemade hot air balloon, but it crashes just before the border. The Stasi finds traces of this attempt to escape and immediately starts investigations, while the two families are forced to build a new escape balloon. With each passing day the Stasi is closer on their heels – a nerve-wracking race against time begins.

The Quartile Take

Balloon is a taut, fact-based thriller built around one of Cold War history's most audacious escape attempts. The plot is genuinely gripping — the dual-timeline pressure of building a second balloon while the Stasi closes in gives the film relentless momentum, earning a well-above-average mark. The ending delivers on that tension with a viscerally satisfying payoff rooted in real events. Acting is solid but functional — the ensemble is convincing without any standout transformative performances. Cinematography is competent period work, effectively evoking the grey claustrophobia of the GDR without doing anything especially cinematic. Novelty is moderate: the East German escape subgenre (cf. 'The Tunnel,' 'Balloon's' spiritual predecessor 'Night Crossing') is established, and while this is a well-executed and distinctive entry, it doesn't reinvent the form.
