Before leaving for Rome with his mother, five year old Natan is taken by his father, Jorge, on an epic journey to the pristine Chinchorro reef off the coast of Mexico. As they fish, swim, and sail the turquoise waters of the open sea, Natan discovers the beauty of his Mayan heritage and learns to live in harmony with life above and below the surface, as the bond between father and son grows stronger before their inevitable farewell.
To the Sea is a quiet, lyrical documentary-drama hybrid distinguished above all by its stunning underwater and oceanic cinematography of the Chinchorro reef — genuinely breathtaking imagery that earns a top mark. The father-son premise amid divorce and impending separation gives the film emotional weight, though the narrative is deliberately thin and meditative, more mood piece than story, which keeps Plot modest. The performances, particularly the naturalistic chemistry between the real-life pair, are warm and unaffected. Novelty sits above average for its contemplative pace and indigenous-heritage angle, though the 'last journey together' emotional arc is a familiar framework. The ending, bittersweet and restrained, suits the film's tone without being especially surprising.
