Prince Akeem Joffer is set to become King of Zamunda when he discovers he has a son he never knew about in America – a street savvy Queens native named Lavelle. Honoring his royal father's dying wish to groom this son as the crown prince, Akeem and Semmi set off to America once again.
Coming 2 America is a largely unnecessary sequel that reverses the premise of the beloved original without adding much new. The plot is formulaic and predictable, leaning heavily on nostalgia rather than fresh storytelling. The acting from Murphy and Hall remains charming and the production design is lavish and colorful, but the film never recaptures the comic energy or heart of the original. Novelty is low as it essentially mirrors the first film's structure in reverse, and the ending wraps up too neatly without real stakes.
