Killer Elite (2011)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

Based on a shocking true story, Killer Elite pits two of the world’s most elite operatives—Danny, an ex-special ops agent and Hunter, his longtime mentor—against the cunning leader of a secret military society. Covering the globe from Australia to Paris, London and the Middle East, Danny and Hunter are plunged into a highly dangerous game of cat and mouse—where the predators become the prey.

The Quartile Take

Killer Elite is a serviceable 2011 action thriller that squanders a promising cast and 'based on true events' hook on a generic, convoluted plot. The story—ex-operative forced back into action to rescue a mentor—is thoroughly well-worn territory, and the screenplay fails to make the secret-society angle feel compelling or coherent. The three leads (Statham, Owen, De Niro) bring professional credibility and elevate scenes individually, but the material doesn't give them much to work with. Cinematography is competent and period-appropriate for its 1980s setting without being distinctive. The film offers little that distinguishes it from dozens of similar Euro-thriller productions of the era it imitates, and the ending resolves without much impact or satisfying payoff, leaving the 'shocking true story' premise feeling largely unexplored.
