A young boy learns that he has extraordinary powers and is not of this earth. As a young man, he journeys to discover where he came from and what he was sent here to do. But the hero in him must emerge if he is to save the world from annihilation and become the symbol of hope for all mankind.
Man of Steel attempts a grittier, more grounded take on Superman but stumbles in execution. The non-linear origin storytelling is a reasonable structural choice but feels fragmented, and the third act devolves into relentless, numbing destruction that undermines the emotional stakes. Henry Cavill brings a stoic presence but the script gives him little interiority to work with, while Michael Shannon's Zod is energetic but one-note. Zack Snyder's visual style is competent with some striking Kryptonian sequences, but the desaturated palette and shaky-cam action scenes become monotonous. As a Superman reboot it doesn't bring a truly distinctive or original vision — it borrows heavily from Nolan's Dark Knight aesthetic and applies it somewhat awkwardly to a character defined by optimism. The ending, featuring Superman's controversial neck-snap, alienated much of the fanbase and feels tonally inconsistent with what the character represents, weakening the film's overall impact.
